Monetary Architecture & Exchange Rate Mechanics in Nepal

Technical specifications of Nepal's pegged currency regime, triangular arbitrage, and open-market central bank operations.

1. Indian Rupee (INR) Hard Peg

Under Section 43 of the Nepal Rastra Bank Act, 2058, the Nepali Rupee maintains a fixed peg to the Indian Rupee at 1 INR = 1.60 NPR (officially 100 INR = 160.00 NPR buy / 160.15 NPR sell) since February 1993:

Fixing: 1 INR = 1.60 NPR (Fixed Peg)

This anchor eliminates bilateral currency volatility with Nepal's largest trading partner (absorbing ~65% of international commerce).

2. Triangular Cross-Rate Pricing

Because NPR is pegged to INR, all convertible third currencies (USD, EUR, GBP, AUD, JPY) are mathematically priced using international USD/INR cross rates:

USD/NPR = (USD/INR) x 1.60

Nepal Rastra Bank publishes daily benchmark mid-rates at 12:00 PM NPT based on morning international market liquidity.

3. Bid-Ask Spread Dynamics

The difference between Central Bank sell and buy rates serves as the operational transaction corridor for licensed 'A' class commercial banks and remittance agencies:

Spread % = [(Sell Rate - Buy Rate) / Buy Rate] x 100

Typically tightly regulated between 0.39% and 0.60% for major currencies like USD and EUR to protect outbound remittances.
