Nepal 13% Value Added Tax (VAT) Engine
Mathematical modeling of forward (+13% VAT), reverse tax extraction, composite hospitality service charge compounding, and business input/output tax reconciliation under Nepal Value Added Tax Act, 2052.
Value Added Tax (VAT) Algorithms & Statutory Specifications
Formal mathematical models governing commercial transactions under the Nepal Value Added Tax Act, 2052.
1. Reverse Extraction Formula
When a price is already gross (VAT inclusive), extracting the net base and tax component requires dividing by 1.13, not multiplying by 0.13:
VAT = Gross x (13 / 113) ≈ Gross x 0.115044
Example: An invoice total of NPR 11,300 yields Net = NPR 10,000 and VAT = NPR 1,300.
2. Composite Hospitality Cascading
In restaurant and hospitality billing, the mandatory 10% Service Charge is added to the food base before VAT is levied on the compounded subtotal:
Gross = Base x (1 + s) x 1.13 = Base x 1.243
This creates an effective total tax & service surcharge markup of 24.30% over the raw menu price.
3. Input-Output Tax Credit Offset
Nepal adopts the destination-based invoice credit method. Businesses pay tax only on the incremental value added:
If Input VAT exceeds Output VAT, the balance is claimed as a tax credit carry-forward against subsequent tax periods.
